In the Head of a Hijacker [sic] Laing takes a subject that would have interested Medardo Rosso or the early [Constantin] Brancusi, a female head tied in a nylon stocking which veils and blunts her features. Knotted on top, its foot hangs down in an elegant curve at one side of the face. In producing a classic sculpture by this means, Laing also shows his preferred sources in topical life, as the demure girl hijacker is well-known on the world stage. Unlike Galina 10 [sic], this work has no architectural or iconic quality, but is ‘private’ and must exist only as life-size and in an enclosed space.
